hi, new to the forum. Just a quick question have got a 1980 range rover with a 1980 sd1 engine on stromberg carbs.
the engine starts fine and runs fine from cold and will run for a few minutes but when it warms up it starts to miss and bog down.
I ahve changed the coil, carb diaphragms, needles, plugs, leads etc. I think the timing marks are out so i have had to time it by ear.
The exhaust is blowing a bit but shouldnt make much difference, I havent fiddled with the idle mixture screws.
It has electronic ignition with a lucas 35d8 dizzy.
Any help much appreciated,
Cheers,
olly

Does it have FASD (a blue thing on the passenger side carb). If so, that's an automatic enrichment device for cold starting that may be stuck open?
Or get the fuel delivery pressure measured to make sure it's not forcing past the float needles.
Do you think it's just one carb or both? What do the plugs look like? If you take the plugs out, make a note of the condition and the cylinder number as each carb does the inner cylinders on one bank and the end two on the opposite bank.

Chris,
I think that you meant it the other way around....that is each carb feeds the cylinders at each end on its own side, along with the two inner cylinders on the opposite bank.
RH carb feeds 2, 3, 5, 8
LH carb feeds 1, 4, 6, 7

I'm not sure, my original post was supposed to be vague in that particular point!
But thanks for stating it, it's obvious when you think about it!

hi, engine has manual choke, took her out for a run today is running a little lean, believe it or not, will start to cut out when the engine has got hot, but off roading today, it did not cut out for at least half an hour.
I am thinking it is something to do with the ignition system, I have changed the coil and dizzy cap.
What ignition systems would you recommend, Ive heard a lot of bad things about this opus sytem.
cheers for you replies,
olly

Helly Olly,
You could fit a Lumenition ignition system.
They make a variety of kits for Lucas distributors as fitted into the Rover V8, so you will just have to find the one suitable for your distributor.

I'd always advocate one of the standard Rover electronic systems. (later the better)
