Hello all, Whilst stripping my heads down, i noticed that there is some wear on the rocker shaft tips (the hardened steel bits that looks like they were put on by a blind monkey, devoid of bananas). Now, the Haynes book of lies says replace if they are excessively worn, but dont actually tell you how much is considered "excessive". Theres a definate dish in them, about 0.4-0.6 mm average, but one is pitted but ive spoke to the guys in our metallurgy department who say that it could be polished out depending on how deep the hardening goes, anyone ever tried to polish/wet and dry a rocker pad?

I suppose it would be possible to polish the wear out but i'd be surprised if the polisher could get the correct curve on the finsihed piece. They have to be curved so that they roll accross the top of the valve.

If the tip is worn then its highly likely that the shaft they rotate on is also worn where the rocker rotates on it. You'd probably be better off replacing the lot. It'll be so much cheaper, easier and reliable to do that.

Complete rockers and shaft can be had for about £100.

I would go with Gav on this, if you have wear on the tip then you have wear on the shaft so replace it all. Your valves will be worn too so get the ends dressed if there is enough material or replace them too. You might be replacing them anyway since your getting the heads done.

Hi,would go with Marki and Gav,have seen rocker that have had deep holes in them indicating once through the hardening things only get worse!And think of that alloy floating around in your oil
