Could somebody please check or tell me how much play the dizzy gear is supposed to have on the cam gear by taking off the rotor arm and turning the shaft either way?

I am lining up my front cover and there is just enough play to make a 'tap' either way, but not by much, (it is completely dry too)

Both gears are worn so I rekon it would be about perfect when I put a new dizzy gear on and turn the cam one around!

Are you sure that the play is not in the bob-weight advance mechanism?

The other thing is the the vertical play (end float) of the dizzy shaft could cause your issue because of the fact that the skew gear will rotate as it rides up and down.

I knocked out the roll pin and shimmed out the play down to 10 thou. If you do this check the fit of the gear both ways round before pushing the pin back home. I broke a gear by not checking the alignment of the hole before pushing the pin back home.

Yes its the mesh of the teeth, I can see it. I dont think theres a worrying amount at all as they will always have a little play- and of course the continous rotation of the engine with the friction of the moving parts will keep it at bay- infact there is more play in the rotor arm on the shaft than there is with the gears meshing! Like I say I am also bearing in mind that the dizzy gear is quite worn...

If you turn the cam cog round make sure you still have a way for oil to get through to the dissy drive gear.
