4.6 main crankshaft bearings

hello all,

finally putting my 4.6 block together and just noticed something.

Does the 4.6 main crankshaft bearings only have one half of a thrust bearing.

As the no.3 bearing has the thrust face....but ive only got one half....

The half with the oil groove, and this must fit in the upper block, as it has the oil hole.

Just making sure, as the rover v8 parts sheet i have shows two halves.

I've got the right amount of bearings, but the bottom to this thrust face one is just the same as the others, and has no side wall.

Is this normal and ok.

cheers

RV8 has 180deg thrust bearing in the middle, the other half is just a normal shell.

Depends where you source your shells from. Late engines (4.0/4.6) don't have a thrust on the lower half, early engines (3.5/3.9/4.2) can have, but it depends on the bearing manufacturer. Early 3.5's had 360 degree thrust from the factory, but later ones had 180, so no probs fitting 180 if that's what you've got. Anyone needing just the no.3 mains with 360 thrust can buy it as a single from Real Steel (and no doubt others stock them also).

Badger, I thought if you wanted 360 you had a little bit of machining to do on the centre cap?

hello, I have a question along the same lines that I wondered if anyone might be able to help with. A while ago I bought a 4.6 crank and some 4.6 pistons to go into my 4.0 block. but when i tried to fit them recently all was going well, the crankshaft was turning freely and the pistons went in fine until it came to bolting the big ends onto the crank.
The problem is that it appears the conrods are too wide for the crankshaft journal. the bearing surface its self is fine but when two conrods are put onto a journal the engine will turn but they rub badly, im sure the pistons are in the correct sides etc. the crankshaft could do with a regrind as it does look abit battered but i think it is more than that. The crankshaft says 4.5 on it, is this right or am i trying to put the wrong crankshaft in this engine? Any information you might have would be greatly appriciated.
many thanks james.

The conrods are handed, there are little bumps that face each other. If you don't fit them the right way the offset will be wrong and they will go tight.

I checked all the rods and they are all in the correct place. I think its most likely due to the damage on the crankshaft to the sides of the bearing surface. Would a crankshaft regrind solve this problem ?
Also the crankshaft has 4.5 stamped on it rather than 4.6 , is this a standard range rover crankshaft ? many thanks james

Don't use a worn out crank!!! (Not without a re-grind and polish anyway)

LR stamped 4.6 on their cranks and TVR 4.5 but both cranks are same.
