I'm a competant mig & tig welder, have good facilities so is there any reason why I couldnt make my own silencers? I really want 1 each side running down beside the sills with a full (sill) length muffler & a flick out at the end, are there any diagrams/tutorials or info on what is best to use?

I made mine for my bike, pics here. I had all the materials to hand so prob didn't use the best, i.e. it's all mild steel MIG'd. It's a straight-through with glass packing. Got the filling from NF Auto but various places flog it. Pretty simple. I'm thinking of making some for my Merc and the Landy too.

All I would need to get in would be the internal pipe as I guess it would need to perforated or louvred and the packing/wadding, but I want it to be fairly quiet as I know it will be loud enough when I put my foot down but dont want to drown my ears whilst cruising! (espec as it has no roof!)

You can buy perf'd baffle tubes in different designs though I did my own.
Mine are pretty loud but then the packed chamber is only about 8" long or so... burbles fairly reasonably until whacked, when it's fairly not reasonable any more... Passed the MOT OK, with a note.

If you want to keep it a bit quieter
The perf tube insde the silencer should be done in a S
So there is not direct line of sight - direct path for the gas - still 2 inches diameter or whatever but will quieten it considerably

Is it not a bit or a hinderance as far as exhaust gasses are concerned? The mufflers can be about 4 or 5 ft long- but there wont be an awful lot more pipe than that in the system! I'm guessing that should keep it fairly quiet?!

I've done a lot of work on the sidepipes on my cob replica. When I bought the car I found that the baffles had been hammered flat in the middle in order to get the car through the SVA. The outer diameter of the sidepipes is only 3" and this has caused problems in that the noise was deafening with any size of normal perf tube. There just was not enough packing round the baffle. The only tube that worked was the stuff that Custom Chrome Racing sell, it has "ears" that stick out into the gas stream that kill the sound. The problem is that the exhaust note is a bit fluffy, especially on over run when its horrible! (90 quid per side! noraml perf is about 15)

I'm now making a new set of 1 3/4 headers that will mate to a set of 4" sidepipes that will have normal 2" perf tube running up the middle.

PowerSpeed can supply all the bits that you need to make a set of pipes, my headers are in mild steel but will be camcoated inside and out. The sidespipes will be in SS.
