on changing the front cover from my early range rover Rv8, i ve found that the oil pump gears are too big for the new cover.

the shorter cover is from a unknown car so no help there.. are there two different sorts of gears?

Hi Gary,
There are indeed 2 types of gears, Pre SD1 and post SD1 the drive at the top is also different basically opposites of one another. The shorter is the early gears.
Hope this helps, i am sure someone will have a picture they can post to show the difference.
cheers John

Just to explain a little further from above. Rover changed the oil pump design because the early pump (short gears) was found to be lacking. This design remained until the last cross bolt engines. Apart from the greater oil pumping capacity they changed the drive from the dizzy because it had a habit of wearing out the gears. In short you would be advised to put your old cover back on unless its knackered, if it is then get another later cover. You will need different gears and an early dizzy if you don't.

Isn`t that the earlier type ?? Thought the later ones has a dog on top instead of the slot as in pic ????

from what i can gather and acording to the engine number, the engine itself is from a early (mid 70's) range rover.

as for the cover i've put on..........no idea.

Thats the early type oil gear as fitted to MGB V8 and P6's etc from that era.

This is the pre SD1 front cover. Actually its a slightly later version of the the early cover as it takes a rubber crank seal. But its the same in all other aspects. This is the cover that will give you the lowest profile for thew engine if bonnet clearance is an issue.

Ive been looking at your gears and they do look like they are long gears, Im thinking they may be some old Real Steel gears, before the Sdi engines were readily avalable Real Steel sold a kit to give more volume to the pump, which consisted of a spacer that fitted the pump body, longer gears and longer bolts, these gears may have been even longer than the SDi gears which could explain the problem, I think Kenne Bell did a similar thing using a modified cover

The oil pump upgrade kit caused me a lot of trouble with excess stress on the dissy drive cog.
