Andy,

I've never done it with the setup in the bellhousing but have found that the easier way to get the clip engaged is to put it into the hole then push it over the end of the lever.

The Haynes manual warns against pulling the rod out, and says if you do, you'll need to remove the gearbox to re-fit it.

But I cut about a foot of plastic pipe so it would slide over the pushrod, right down to the retaining clip on the end. If you get the alignment of the plastic clip right, the tube will help you push it back on. If I remember correctly the plastic clip has to be oriented to about the two o'clock position to catch in position.

it is a pain with the gearbox still on - I did exactly the same thing a month or two ago and had to take the box off to fix it back on! But like Ian said, I'm sure you can make something to try an slip it on to the clutch fork, I had housemates to assist so the gearbox was off and back on in 20mins hehe
