Hello,
Do you know if it is possible to use high grade standard bolts instead of stretch bolts on later 4.0/4.6 rods ?
Thank

Do you mean as in standard hex head bolt or standard rod bolts? If hex bolts then no there isn't any room for the hex on either the head or the nut. It also needs to be a fine thread for accurate torquing and clamping forces. I would imagine the shoulder could be quite critical as well to keep everything lined up properly. I didn't actually know they used stretch bolts to be honest. Don't like the sounds of that but then I don't like stretch bolts generally anyway. My top tip here would be to use ARP rod bolts.

Myself I don't like stretch bolt. First you can use it only one time and secondly after angular torquing you can't check nothing.

It is my understanding that only head bolts are "stretch bolts". Connecting rod bolts like main bearing cap bolts are all high tensile.
On a 4.6, the standard Rover high tensile bolts for rod and main caps are totally suitable for all applications including racing.

Confirmation from the Land Rover engine manuals covering all 3.5, 3.9. 4.0, 4.2 and 4.6 litre engines, that stretch bolts are not used for connecting rods.
Connecting rod bolts are high tensile only and unlike stretch bolts are totally reusable.

Thank you Ron

.
I posted this topic because rod bolts on 4.0/4.6 are torque and angle setting type ( 20 NM and then 90o more) like head bolts on 4.0/4.6.
So I suspected rod bolts waren also ''stretch bolts''.
