I've got an 8" bench grinder that I use mainly to clean up on bits of metal and sharpening electrodes for my welder (I know i shouldn't). I got hold of a couple of polishing wheels with the itention of shining up some old valve covers I have lying around. I used to do this with a hand drill with very good results. The polishing wheel threads onto a threaded spindle. The vibration when running the mops is ridiculous. Have I just been unlucky and got duff mops or are they always like this? with the grinding wheel I can use the grinder without even bolting it down if I want, with the mop it'll shake the whole stand even if I bolt the stand to the floor!

I use an 8" mop on my cheap bench grinder and it tries to walk off the table.
With the stones on its fine. But stick a mop on one end and I reach for the battery drill and a few big screws to clamp it onto a tree stump I use as a wooden anvil.

Could it just be that the grinder is running a lot faster than a drill or mop would do?

I run them in the pillar drill on high speed.

Yep, that's exactly what I get. I might try a smaller mop or maybe a shorter or different spindle arrangement.

Hi I think for a high speed device like a bench grinder you will have to use mops designed and ballanced for the higher speed, might want to try this lot, they have a wide range of stock!
