Exhaust outlet's, MOT's and Constuction & Use Regs

Just wondered if anyone knew the rules on where an exhaust could exit?
Ive always seen exhaust at either the rear, or side exit at the rear wheels (i.e. Cobra and Street Eliminator cars)
Just noticed Perrys appears to be dumping at the front wing

Did have a google for vehicle construction and use regs, but all I can find are addendments to the main document

So in theory, as long as a) its secure b) has no leaks and c) meets the emissions (visual test only due to age)...... anything goes?

best thing to do is ask your local friendly MOT tester. at least that way you will have a yes or no straight away

Hi Ian,
As a tester myself, would not fail side exit exhaust.Would advice if the car had headers like a Funny car
just in case predestrians get set on fire

A mate of mine took his MGB for a test and was told by the tester that any side exit exhaust is illegal in the UK.
I told him to tell the tester he was wrong but he just went elswhere.
The guy tests commercials for a living so I guess he never came across a Merc van with the side pipe eh?
My MOT man is ok with my pipes as they exit just in front of the rear wheels. He did make me lengthen them so he could see the tip from above just to make sure he was happy about the gasses getting away clean at a standstill.
The pipes I race with are basically just two 45 degree bends stuck on the main pipes as I take the Chevy Mufflers off for racing.
I only did this to reduce the risk of the cabin filling with smoke as it has done on the last two occasions I melted some pistons.
I do know you that most testers wont be happy if the tip of the pipe is under the car.

Unless Mercedes have got Carbon Monoxide sensing in the cabin which kills the engine in a miss-hap then it would appear to be legal to put them out between the front wheel and door.

That Merc does look rather unusual and tidy with the pipes there I think.
