Hi Folks,

I've got a RV8 with an edelbrock 1404 carb, but bonnet clearance is an issue, even with the 14x2" low rider air filter.

What I'd like to do is get some sort of shallow right angle adaptor that would fit on top of the carb in place of the air cleaner, and allow a large bore flexible ducting to be attached, so that I can fit a cone filter somewhere.

As well as helping with bonnet clearance, I could probably get a colder air supply to the carb.

Does such a thing exist, or would I have to resort to making one?

Have a look on E-Bay or Google for Carb Hats / Bonnets, they are out there (if what im thinking of, is what you are after!)

Yes, it seems a carb hat/bonnet is exactly what I'm after, i've just never heard them called that before.

The ones I've seen after a quick search are kinda what I'm looking for, but I'd need quite a low profile one. The inlet pipe would have to start off round (for connecting to the air duct), but then gently taper into an oval or rectangular port into the 'hat' itself. I reckon I've only got about 1" clearance above the top of the carb.

I am toying with the idea of making one out of GRP. I could make a buck out of stacked slices of MDF, smoothed with filler, etc. Of course the mould would need to have a parting line built into it, and it'll be tricky working out the shapes of the MDF slices (any free CAD programs?).

If it is going into the car in your avtar why not mold the duct into your bonnet and hafe the bonnet seal onto the top of the carb - everything out the way when you open up.

It is for the car in my avatar, but simply sealing the duct to the bonnet still leaves me clearance problems for the air filter.

Basically I want a remote mounted air filter.

KN do a carb plenum for either one or two remote filters, not cheap but unless you can make it yourself not much you can do.

This any good? For low profile it would need the base machining. also needs a few bolts to plug the nitrous feeds.

Looks good for the price, but the 5.1" tall might be too much, even with machining the base down. I reckon I've only got 1.5" above the top of the carb.

Crikey thats not much. You may need to investigate machining the to of the manifold down a bit.

Yes, really tempted to! It'll just take some bottle to carve a dirty great hole in my nice bonnet, but I'm quite tempted by the hot-rod look. Nigel Dean's Cobra rep in Kit-Car mag has one, and I quite like the look of it.

I've seen them for about $110 from summit racing, but is there anywhere in the UK that supplies them?

You got me wrong.

Build the duct into the bonnet so that the duct seals on the carb

Take the duct forward or rearwards and then fit the filter / filters wherever you have space on the other end of the duct.

Do you know how much clearance you have directly above the carb and is the carb directly below the air intake in the bonnet, Can't see exactly what your car is from the small avatar pic.

Most bonnets have some curvature so if you have a 14" filter it can be very tight on the extreme front and side edges.

If you can get the 14" x 2" with 1 1/2" drop base under the bonnet, put a cone of Blue tack or plasticene in the centre of the filter on the wing nut and gently close the bonnet, open the bonnet and measure the compressed height add 1/2" and that will be how much space you have to play with and how high a mini plenum can be.

If you can't get a filter in you'll have to put some thing thin on top of the carb and put the blue tack on top of that making sure it doesnlt move and give you a false reading.
