Hi,
How long is it safe to run a Rover V8 with no water in the block?
Cheers

Hello V8chevette,
It is NEVER safe to run any engine, even a Rover engine without water in the block.
There are many variables which will influence whether or not damage has been done.
For starters,...
What capacity is the Rover V8 engine?
How long was it run for?

The engine itself would be fine for a minute or so however the water pump seal does not like to run without water to lubricate it.
You could remove the fan belt so that the pump does not run.

As Rover V8's do not like being overheated especially the later 4.0 and 4.6 engines. this causes cracking of the block behind the liners and then liner slippage so the answer has to be seconds rother than minutes I'm afraid.
How long did it run for and what capacity, if its a 3.5 you may have got away with it if it was only for a very short time.

It's a 3.5 and for about 30 seconds the water pump is hung up in the garage
How long could you run it for if just the block was filled?

Plenty of drag racing rover engines have been run with no cooling and filled block. I believe Luke Bennets altered ran 9's with this kind of set up.
