When I put my loom together, I used wire that has a lot of fine strands, its a low loss wire caled superflex?, and you get it from maplins, being flexible it resists fatigue breakages, only trouble with it is it only comes in Black or red, I got around the ID probs by printing off lots of little lables on the computer, and using clear shrinkwrap labled each end of the wire where needed,
Another thing I did was CRIMP all the wires and not solder any of them, soldering will cause a fatigue point where the solder ends internally in the wire, , I was even more impressed with my loom when a mate of mine who worked for Prodrive and now for Renault F1 as an electronics engineer told me the loom was "Spot on", only it was too heavy!!!!!, Ive seen some of his looms using aircraft wire and insulation so thin you would not think it could stop any form of current dissipating, more like the cellophane fag packets are wrapped in,

crimp and solder is fine if you use the correct strain relief (AKA heatshrink). If you have a good crimp tool then the crimp is a cold weld and very strong. Pull test every crimp

DO NOT USE THOSE NASTY PRE-INSULATED BLUE/RED CRIMP CONNECTORS. EVER. they are carp.
