I've read two methods of fitting the engine/gearbox into an MGB:

One is raising the back of the car up on axel stands

The other is raising the front end up (ramps etc.)

- does anyone have experience with this, and if so what's the best (easiest) methods. I have an engine lifter using chains etc. from the garage roof, not a mobile engine hoist/stand thing (unless anyone wants to lend me one for a while!)

Also, head roumours that the starter motor will hit the chassis rail if tightened on, has anyone experience clearance issues with the MGB?

Hi Mate

I had my RV8 with an LT77 box in and out of the car 4 times last week.

It now takes about 15 mins from garage floor to in-car.

There are a few things to do first.

I use a hydraulic lift and a engine level bar. (before I used a strap connected to the end of the box but the level bar is easier)

The exhaust manifolds need to be off and the starter motor removed.

Have a trolley jack ready under the car.

Remove passenger side engine mount rubber.

Fit other mount rubber as it cannot be got to with the steering column in.

Push level engine over engine bay and wind leveller to tilt the engine to about 45 deg. As the nose of the box drops push the whole lot forward.

Eventually the bottom of the box needs to be supported on the trolley jack under the car.

This should allow you to get the engine almost in.

Fit the engine mount to the engine loosely, then push up under the drain plug of the sump with another jack and the engine will twist enough for you to get the other engine mount in position.

Lower the 2nd jack and hey presto the engine is in.

The jack under the car will help to get the box positioned for the cross member.
