Hi all, interesting forum and a lot to read!

I'm looking to do away with the points ignition on my '73 rover p6 - can anyone point me in the right direction as to what sort of kit to look for?

cheers :D

IN theory you could just swap in a distributor from a Range Rover (or SD1) and use it's electronic igntion setup. But I have a feeling that the distributor shaft has a different fitting on the bottom (which drives the oil pump) between electronic ignition Range Rovers and points P6's.

If you swapped the timing cover as well for an SD1 timing cover, you'd get a better oil pump and you could fit the electronic igntion. Don't fit a Range Rover timing cover as it's taller than the SD1 cover.

Pertronix Ignitor kit ?

I suggested RetroRockets in Connecticut for buying Pertronix stuff a while ago. You order from the US site and pay the US dollar prices, plus a bit of shipping, but the kit is delivered from a UK warehouse.

So .. I recently put my money where my mouth was and gave them a try. A Pertronix Ignitor for Rover V8, plus a resin filled Flamethrower coil came to just over £70 all in. Equivalent UK pricing would be a little over £135.

There was a few weeks wait while my ignitor unit came back into stock, but overall I'm happy.

Carl Dudash at RetroRockets was helpful and ID'd the ignitor I needed from a digital pic of my dissy baseplate.

I fitted a Lumenition optronic system to my original 1975 dissy and it has been fine.
I also put an MSD blaster 2 coil on with it. No probs at all.

I did notice on flea bay you can get a Mallory setup for around 230 quid.
