Good Idea or not?

I have just seen what to me seems a very good idea. :D

The Coil mounted on the end on the right head. (Viewed from the front of the engine)

It looks neat and reduces the wire length between the coil and distributor.

On my set up the wires to the coil go all around the front of the car, and are at least 2 metres long.

I have been told that the coils fitted here do not suffer from vibration or get any hotter than normal.

Has any one tried fitting the coil on the end of the head?

The distributor is mounted not far away and has electronics in it!

Bo**ocks! It will get vibration and will more than certainly get more heat than normal (unless it's normally mounted to the exhaust manifold?)

If you use the original coil bracket, you could use a few plastic washers to make sure there's no direct metal-matal connections to cut doen on conductive heating.

Having said that, I say try it - coils are about £10 so who cares if you have to carry a spare and replace it yearly?

Hi JSF55
Is yours fitted directly with no rubber washers or heat isolation.
The one I saw was bolted directly to the head.
It looked very neat.

Yep, couple of 3/8" unc bolts did the job fine, oh and i did slot the rear one to make it easier to take on and off, john

Ta John
My coil bracket is already slotted.
I will give it a go. :D

If its a normal coil then vibration shouldn't damage it as its basically a strip of paper and a strip of foil inside it. Heat can and will kill it though but I don't know if engine temp is enough to do it.

I am going to give it a go.
Thinking about it I would expect the coil to die almost immediately or at least pretty quickly unless it is quite happy in this position.
From the info I have received, of all the coils fitted this way, none have failed, so it seems a good bet to me.

That's where mine is fitted, and has been fine for 3 years. I used the original coil bracket, and just enlarged the holes/slots slightly to fit.
