replacement stepper motor probs

hiya all.
The stepper motor 73312A for my hotwire efi was duff, so i bought a replacement from a ebayer seller.
The new unit identified the same 73312A and looks the same, fits the same.
But when i fit the loom connector plug, it will only fit when its rotated 90deg clockwise.
But then the retention clips do not align and theres nothing to stop the plug falling out.
What worries me more is if i connect it 90deg out, will the wires be the wrong way round and ruin a new stepper motor.
Is there anyway to test the motor to find out which connections move it in and which move it out without knacking it.
thanks for any help.
