DETOX ?

My 1983 land Rover 110 V8 has a 15G engine fitted with the full Detox system. Running mainly on LPG, but petrol for about 5% of mileage.
Question - besides the obvious effect on emissions (assuming - big assumption - that all the pipework, etc is in good nick) what is the detox system doing to performance & smooth running ? Is it worth removing the detox system ? Can it be done ? How easily ?
I'm thinking about doing some major work anyway - new clutch, change from Strombergs to SU's, new camshaft (standard), timing gear, tappets, etc - so now is the time to do it if I need to/can.
