Query on the 4.6 build

Hello chaps.
I'm now ready to put the sump on the 4.6 and I see there is no where to bolt the windage tray. I'm using the front cover and sump from a spare 3.5 engine.
Does the 4.6 have no tray between the sump pan and the crank? I can see a spare bolt hole in one of the journals. Is this for some sort of baffle?

I am assuming I can use the oil pickup and sump pan from my 3.5 engine. I cant see why not.
I'll start on the gerabox work now while I wait for advice.

Thanks
Perry

I think I need a range rover sump dont I??
But it wont fit in my engine bay. I suppose I could weld a baffle plate inot a spare MG sump pan couldnt I??

I'm off to dig out a spare pan.

the tray was part of the sump pan in the range/land rovers, I think it was only the 2wd cars that had the separate tray. Welding it onto the sump might be your only option if you cant get the other sumps to fit.

Hi Marki
I've been doing some research, and I came up with this.
I got some pics in a book and roughly scaled off the depth from the sump flange at 40mm. I've also cut the vee's in the front, and made it the same length as the RR one.

I've knocked it up out of 1.2mm steel plate that I had spare. It does actually fit as well. My MIG is shagged, so I'm going to tack it all round with silver alloy solder that is suitable for steel.

Do you think this will be ok??

The gap under the back end is about 3/4 inch, and I've angled it down towards the rear a few degree's by the way.

Looks like it should do the job from what I can see. I can take a pic of a RR one tomorrow if you like?

Yes please Marki. I wont finish brazing it in until I've seen your pic mate.

I'll carry on with some other bits. If your pic is ok and the depth is right, I can get the new engine on the th350 and bolted into the bay tomorrow.

Many thanks

Perry,

I have some pics of a 4.6 alloy sump which show the plate. RPI are selling these at half price at the moment on e-bay £70.00 don't know if there is enough clearance for one of these on a MGB though.

If you can't find the pics on e-bay let me have your e-mail and i'll send them.

Hi Perry
I did this on my 4.0L engine 7 years ago (now 4.6)
All you need to do is drill and tap holes exactly as the older engine.
You will need to remove the crossbolts first though.
If your engine is assembled then do it from below so that swarf falls away.
Im using my original sump and windage tray from my MGB factory V8 engine.
I did put some baffles in because oil pressure dropped under heavy braking.
You might find that the dip stick just touches the crank and needs slight modification.

Cheers Mark
I'll try the dipstick tomorrow to make sure it goes in ok.

A mate had a spare sump pan that I copied today. But I havent tried the diptick tube yet.

I think one question remains unanswered, the bolt hole in one of the caps. This is used to hold the internal oil feed pipe on the later engines the pickup is via the timing cover.
