I have a Rover V8 in my TR7 which I have just fitted a Lumenition kit to. However, on completion I noticed the instructions state that a coil that is for electronic ignition must not be fitted as this will destroy the module. I then ordered a new coil from SS Preparations which came and states that it is only to be used with electronic ignition, they say it is okay.
I rang Lumenition who say get rid of the electronic ignition coil like the fitting instructions say.
Who is right can someone please tell me what to do. I have had the car running and it is poor, okay when cold but as it warms up it misfires under load and runs rough, pointing to the coil.
I have however heard that the rotor arms can be suspect even though they look okay.
I took a lot of time doing the job and setting up only to hve a misfiring car. The Plugs and Leads have not done many miles 6000 or so. The distributor is the 35 DE8 from a 81 SD1.
Any help please.

I would say you need to do what Luminition advises. They know their product and if nothing else if it does break and you use a coil they say you cant then your stuffed.

It would be interesting to find out why you cant use an electronic ignition coil with it mind you.

I fitted a lumenition kit on my RV8 (1976) to replace the OPUS inards. From memory you have to get the resistance of both the coil and ballast resistor above or below a certain value can't remember which, you also have to set the plug gap as per the instructions, which is much smaller than in the Haynes manual for my model.

The Lumenition Kit was designed to replace a simple points type ignition system using a coil of 1.0 to 1.5 ohms or more resistance. The coil current is thus set to around 10 amps and the Lumenition coil switching transistor will be rated to that level.
More modern electronic ignition systems use coils typically of 0.5 ohm thus doubling the coil current the switching transistor is required to carry prior to turning off.

Follow the instructions from Lumenition.

I had Lumention running ok on my 3.5 SD1 using the standard coil.

When I fitted a 4.6 swapped to an Accel coil and had all sorts of misfires, starting problems. So I bought a standard Bosch coil, nothing fancy, but it worked fine.

Then moved onto fitting an MSD6L which involved removing the Lumeniton module (but retaining their optical trigger in the dissy) and fitting a special "Lumenition to MSD" module that MSD sent me free of charge. This is mated up to an MSD Blaster 2 coil.

I have fitted a ne cap and rotor arm, the rotor arm made no difference but the cap has all but cured the misfire, even though the cap I took off looked good ( lesson here me thinks!) However, there is still a misfire under load and when warmed up, the car idles well and revs freely but does misfire under load. The misfire also gets worse when the heater is switched on.
