Edelbrock running rich

HI there,
I have an Edelbrock AVS2 500 on a 3.5l rover engine and it runs way too rich on overrun (to the extent that cars behind can smell raw fuel coming out the exhaust). I've got the carb pump down at minimum throw. Performance is awesome but fuel consumption is dire even on motorway runs. Does anyone have experience/advice on this ?

1. Have it tuned correctly.
2. That's probably all it needs.
It is highly unlikely fuel on the overrun alone is causing huge fuel consumption.

I was afraid someone would say that. The carb came jetted specifically for my engine so I'd hoped it would be good out of the box...

Well it starts drives and runs, that is good.
Could it ever be optimal ? doubtful.

Not really carb' oriented these days so I may be talking rubbish (mind you that's true of many things I do know about!). Seems to me that on overrun/closed throttle only airflow should be thourgh the bypass idle which shoulld not allow too much through, is it possible the throttle plates are set too far open allowing flow through the main body (and possibly the bypass idle blocked or ineffective)

My initial thought would be is the float level correct? perhaps level too high so fuel flooding into carb
