I've got a Rover V8 from a series Land Rover that I broke up.
Compression ratio would seem to be 10.5:1

I'm just wondering if this lump can be made to run on modern (UK) petrol, or will the high CR make it an absolute nightmare ?

I want to be able to fill up anywhere, I really don't want to be spending all my time hunting down high octane, ethanol free fuel, or measuring out capfuls of additives every time I fill up.

The original SU carbs seem to have been replaced by HIF6 units from a SD1

Lots of P5B and P6B cars are running that cr ratio with only minor tweeks if necessary so your Land Rover sourced engine should be no different. It will have come out of a P5B or P6B originally. Retarding the ignition should enable you to run standard unleaded.

From 1972 on P6B had HIF6 carbs, SD1 never did, they were HIF44 by then.

I guess it also depends how well fuel and timing etc is tuned.

Modern stuff run 11.0:1 no problem at all on any fuel, even "modern LS" which is still and old basic pushrod V8.

But certainly in England etc, super unleaded, V-Power etc are readily available, so should be ok.

Refering back to my OP
I'm looking to build up a daily driver which I can fill up with supermarket unleaded, available everywhere 24/7.

I really don't want to be constantly searching the internet trying to find filling stations which sell super unleaded, and other specialist fuel.
Often the information is inaccurate anyway, so you detour miles out of your way, only to find the fuel no longer available, or the place closed an hour ago.

And I'm really going to do my best to burn the E10 fuel, if at all posible.
I really don't want to be tipping stuff in the tank that will kill the ethanol unless I absolutely have to

In Australia we have E 10 (Ron 94), Unleaded 91 (RON 91), Unleaded 95, Unleaded 98 and have had these for many years - some since 1986. Our fuel can also have a small component of ethanol but it rarely does. Unleaded 91 is the mainstay fuel that most of our vehicles run on. Our E10 though the cheapest fuel and with a good RON is not popular - it has less calorific content so is not as powerful as unleaded 91 - the result is that on a mpg cost is is more expensive that 91 so it is not used much.

The RV8 does not have any issues on any of these fuels so just fill up and use.

I don't remember seeing those

Think the SD1 started out manual choke SU, then Stromberg and then back to SU, all auto choke or electronic control.
