Hi Guys,

just a quick question fr the Chevy guys.

My mate just went out and boat a speed boat, bit scruffy and the twat did not even here it run.

It has a Chevy 5 Ltr V8 with a holley carb. It has points and condenser basically old school.

When I normally order parts for my Chevy the ask for chassis number to get right parts, obviously the boat does not have the same style chassis number and I cant get in to to see engine number.

How do I make sure he orders right parts for the right chevy engine?

I know with the ford 302 (5 litre) engine you get a variant called a Marine engine

Perhaps they did the same with the Chev?

A question in a good marina would probably get the correct answer - then go away an buy the parts from a cheaper source - that is if you are allowed as a lot of boat stuff has to be registered before use (damn do gooders!)

Its a 1988 Bayliner Capri

Dark blue exterior and a lovely white blue and pink stripey interior.

Oh it looks like a bag O'sh***

But will I manage to get it to run, tomorrow we will find out.

Have a look on mortec.com for locations of engine & casting nos, and ID lists. Maybe you can see enough to id the motor?
The basic generation of engine can be seen from the rocker cover bolt pattern, Vortec heads have center bolts, earlier ones are perimeter. Depending exactly what stuff it needs, loads of SBC parts will fit. Real Steel would be able to advise.
Carb should be a specific marine type.

Well been fighting with the Chevy engine, even getting spark plugs out is a feet because of the exhaust manifolds, they are nothing like a cars manifolds the ar chunky as hell and come up the way. They dont leave much room to get the socket in.

Engine wont turn by starter or power bar, cramk moves a mm or two but nothing more.

Poured tons of penetrating oil down the barrles and going to let it sit for a day or two.

I spoke to the guy my friend bought the boat of and he surprisingly enough spent the money and wont have any for a few months.

As for chevy engines I have not managed to find out if they do a marine engine, but plan to have the engine out one of the Camaros on sunday so will be able to get a good look and compare the two.
