Hello people, first timer so go easy. I have a rover 3.5 I'm rebuilding and have turned my thoughts to the drive train, heard about a rover 2.5 v6 gearbox maybe a audi box, any thoughts?

What are you trying to do ?

Are we talking auto or manual gearbox?

There's a bloke that put a RV8 onto a Land Crab box and stuffed it in a Mini, so the possibilities are endless...

The Land Crab has basically an MGB box, so I'd not expect it to do well with the torque of an RV8.

It still needs clarified what he wants to do.

A lot of Audi's use a transaxle...so is that want he wants ? Or is it actually transverse like most FWD cars ?


VW's 02 gearbox seems popular and strong....although mating any gearbox to a RV8 in such a configuration will be entirely up to the user. It wouldnt be a very common fitment.

Or Ralph could probably machine up something like he did for his PG1

Told you I was new, me bad. My aim is to use the powertrain in a exocar, space frame design, the engine is to be mid mounted sitting behind the cab frame, it will be light as!! Now I've designed roughly for the power to be directed via transverse, my reason being I'm worried about a transaxle being quite long? However I need advice if this is the way forward or not? The engine is a 3.5 1985 land rover 110 power plant, CR8.13-1 on Stromberg carbs, I'm not going to mess to much, just rebuild to blueprint spec with k&N filters possibly mild road cam but nothing got. So the transmission doesn't have handle huge rpm, so ladies and gentlemen start your engines (keyboards).

Transaxles are not that long....but then with the engine lengthways, of course the overall package might be long.

Whether it's too long or not depends on what it's going into.

A conventional transverse fwd gearbox will make the package shorter...but it is fairly uncommon to take that approach. Not sure if there is any specific reason why.

I've looked Renault UN1 units, then the price, and it put me off! My reasoning for the transverse is all about keeping the car compact however the comments are leading me think this a unusual arrangement. I have seen plenty of audi, be, porsche transaxle boxes for sale, should I be looking at them? Because of the lightness of the frame will I have to much to far back?

You could be looking at many things. You're the one with the frame and can see what space you have.

We're all running rather blind here with pretty much no information.

And no sense buying any box you've no hope of bolting the the gearbox. So are you able to fabricate any brackets/flywheel/clutch/shafts etc, or do you need to purchase these from someone who can ?

ie just buy a kit that already exists.
