I have my new 4.6 RV8 engine, with a 3.9 sump and a 3.5 dipstick !
I need to know the exact oil capacity of a 3.9 so I can see where I am at, I have looked all over the web with different results, if someone replies from the USA or whatever their measurements are different to the UK which is even more confusing, cant find an oil capacity in online 3.9 PDF manuals, anyone got the right answer ?
I have no oil cooler, just the std 4.6 engine but with a SD1 type front cover/oil pump/dissy.

SD1 sump Dave? if so about 6.5 litres

Figure given for my SD1 EFI sump is 4.8 litre.
Plus 0.6 litre each for oil filter and oil cooler.

But he is using a 3.9 sump

The volume of the sump doesn't really matter does it?

if you have a matching dipstick and dipstick tube then that measures oil height below the crank - that is the same what ever the volume of your sump? Some sumps (NAS etc) are bigger to give more oil due to thermal requirements or longer service life not because the engine needs 'more' oil in any way.

Very true.

The MG 3.9 RV8 is 5.7 ltrs + filter. My MG V8 4.0 [3.9] Griffith takes 6.0ltrs + filter + oil cooler & lines with SD1 front cover. Both of these run standard 3.9/4.0 sumps.

Devonrod, why not fill with 6ltrs + filter capacity, let oil settle then mark off new capacity on 3.5 dipstick...

If as you say the level of the oil is the height below the crank, could it be that Rover set the maximum level lower to suit the greater stroke of the 4.6 compared to the 3.5/3.9.
If so, using a matching 3.5 stick and tube would give incorrect max and min.

Thanks for the replies, I found that a 3.9 range rover sump, the one I have got, takes 5.8 litres. according to the factory workshop manual I found.
