I have recently removed the fuel rail from my Rover V8 and cannot see any shraeder valve or location for such a thing. Did they not all have them, or is there a take off or something that has to be added to it?

It depends.

The Flapper (and Hotwire I think) systems had a return pipe to the tank, so air would be purged that way.
Thor has the schraeder valve (although it's basically inaccessible when the engine is installed....!)
Not sure about GEMS.
