Hi.....

Im new so go easy.....

I've just picked up a part built westfield weight kit. The engine block was purchased direct from landcover 2009, and on the bill, it says:

LSTC1891 inward cylinder ass

with a hand written number (which Is not on the block) reading S42D32420A 9.35/1...Other numbers on the block are VAM22 and LCF000250

The head is a 10 bolt but was purchased second hand (which 27000miles), and reads HRC 247 15.

So, can anyone shed any light on what I have ?.....

Appreciate your thoughts....Paul.

Hi Paul your LCF block is one of the last to leave the factory they were not normally stamped in the usual place on the block but came with an identifying plate as the factory had a lot of trouble with the 4.0/4.6 Ltr blocks these tended to be factory replacement s in a lot of vehicles. They were graded 3 colours red being the thickest wall the identification paint was put on the valley wall, you would have to remove the valley gadget to see this if it's still visible. Looks like you have a late 4.0 Ltr block. Are you sure your 10 bolt heads are not HRC2479? Hope this helps Cheers Mark.

Hi Paul
Just read your post again so to clarify you have a late LCF 4.0 ltr factory replacement engine supplied to a land rover specification no engine number stamped on the block but supplied with an engine identification Plate which was the norm. Compression ratio 9.35/1.
Check your head numbers again.

Cheers

Mark

Thanks for that bit of info Mark I have one of these blocks sitting on the floor with the attached bonded label you have cleared up its background for me I purchased it 2nd hand year ago just not got round to using it yet 8-) I just presumed it was a LR warranty replacement of sorts for a failed block

Thats great.....thanks so much more the info.

I will try and get more info from the heads.....

I guess the real question is...are these blocks ok, and would they be a good basis for a half decent engine....I would like to think by this stage they had sorted out some of the reported issues?.

Hi Paul,
Yes these blocks are very good especially the red blocks. Some people tend to get them top hat lined but this is really not necessary, you would be very unlucky to suffer any issues with this block. John Eales does not top hat line these as a matter of choice. I have a John Eales LCF block 4.6 and have just sold a 4.6 lcf block . Don't cook it and it will give you no bother.
These late blocks were produced with better quality control throughout the process, use it and enjoy it.

Cheers Mark.

Just confirm, Engine does have red marks in the valley. Also, the head marks after careful scrutiny are HRC 2479-15.

Out of interest, what would be an approximation of power from this block and heads with a piper 270 cam, all fuel injected with ACT plenum, Canems ECU, and a half decent exhaust system.

I'm not hung up on bhp figures, just curious.

Hi Paul
Red block that is champion, standard head casting numbers, if they have not had any work done on the heads Darkspeed is right the heads are the downside of these, a Rover v8 with your cam etc I would say 200-220 tops. You would see a big difference in going for a pair of stag3 heads they really make all the difference.
Cheers
