Serpentine crankshaft pulley.

I have been slowly getting the parts required to change the front of my Rover v8 engine from the original V belt drive to the serpentine belt system.
Have now got the correct crankshaft pulley, but noticed that there is a groove worn into the pulley by the timing cover oil seal.
Any ideas how i can overcome this potential problem?
The last thing i want is an oil leak from the front cover.

If you haven't got machining capabilities these work.

As Ged says!
If the groove is too deep then fit a sleeve for peace of mind. :)

How deep is your groove??

Thank you, not seen these sleeves before.

Measured the groove at 0.010".

If its only 10 thou it would not worry me. But you need peace of mind Dude. Sleeve that thing back to stock size mate.

I have used speedi sleeves in many similar situations and they work well - they are cheap and easily fitted - no special tools needed.

If the groove is deep it may be worth filling it with a heat resistant epoxy filler first and leveling it with the surface - this provides a little extra support under the speedi sleeve

In some situations though, it may be possible to put the oil seal in a different position so the seal runs on a different section of the shaft.

Or - you can get seals for where there is a groove - very slightly oversize.

Speedi Sleeves are the answer. We use them on some of our helicopters' transmissions as OEM fit for seals.

Chances of the groove lining up on a different engine in a way that makes it leak are slim I reckon. A different solution though maybe to just shim your pulley, water pump pullet and alternator a little to move the grove away from the seal.

Hi shanecl,

Does it matter? Surely the work involved is the same.

I bought a new 4.2 tall engine about 8 years ago and have been slowly building it up ready to replace the 3.5 engine in the Stag. Just waiting for some matching to be done and then it is ready to go in.

I have just replaced the front end on the TR8 to serpentine and found it quite easy, Rover 4l cross bolted engine. This set up does not include a PAS pump, but I have made up a bracket to fit the standard serpentine belt tensioner.

I can provide photos if you want.

Just to update the topic of this thread, I left the pulley as it was, (I did not sleeve it) and it does not leak.
