just a quick ask but running a rover 3.9 with a 4.4 stroker bought the engine as is & with only 10,000mile from new but I drove it 160miles & it used 2ltr of oil but cant see any massive visual smoke little chuff when back off from full throttle but not like the amount its using, what maybe the obvious? I do have a mid range vacuum whistle poss inlet gasket or have I got the breather set up wrong etc any advice would be great

If it's not in the cooling system or on the floor, then it went out the tailpipe.
10k miles from "new" and using that amount of oil suggests that whoever "newed" it could have made a mistake of some sort.
Oil control rings maybe assembled incorrectly?

Has your oil dip stick tube moved, thereby moving the dipstick further from the bottom of the sump?

2ltrs and per 160 miles is a shed load of oil. recheck the oil consumption over a few more 80mile runs, therefore confirming it's a constant oil loss. it would be worth checking with the engine builder precisely what parts were new 10,000 miles ago. and even then, they'd have needed to seriously cock up a rebuild to burn this volume of oil. hopefully you'll find the answer is more simple...like knowing the true overall system oil capacity [engine, oil cooler, cooler hoses, filter etc] and making sure the previous owner hadn't only filled the engine capacity, forgetting any external volumes. and as above, do post pics of engine and breather system...
