Does the timing chain have a tensioner?

Hi everyone.

I have a Land Rover 109 with a 3.5 V8 from an SD1 in it. I've just taken the timing cover off (took me all day!) to find that the chain is way too loose. I know these are prone to stretching, but I can't see how the chain is tensioned up to account for wear.

Are the sprockets and chain fitted in one go, under tension, and it's assumed that it wont wear significantly to need a tensioner, or is there a tensioning method somewhere I'm missing?

Thanks for your help!

There isn't a tensioner, the chain is fitted to the gears and then they just slide on to the shafts.
