LT77 main parts - can't identify?

Hi,

Got myself an LT77 for my MG V8 build. Serial Number 52A0070118D which according to Ashcroft's is a Long Stick originally fitted to a Defender. I've also bought a gearbox remote to relocate the gearshift when I assemble it.

Problem is when I look at a fully assembled unit there are parts I do not have. See the picture in the link below. Specifically the bit I've labeled "WHAT IS THIS SECTION". My box didn't come with this and I'm worried I've bought the wrong box for my application.

Do you think I could have bought an ex military box. I've seen some ex military boxers with 51A serial's but not 52A like mine?

Any help much appreciated.
Stephen

Hi
Pretty sure that bit is 5th gear.
the 77 is a 4 speed box and 4 speed casing with 5th gear "added" on the end in it's own case.
best regards
Mike

Thanks Mike, I've not seen anyone selling 5th gears separately for LT77's so I guess you either use them as a four or five speed boxes. Meaning I suspect that I've got the wrong LT77 version for my project.

The "not sure" bit is a pulse drive for an electronic speedo.

You have bought a 4x4 LT77 box which is no good for you if you want RWD application - where the "what is this" section is part of the transfer box attachment section on your box and splined output shaft rather than the flange drive.

Ratio's may not be that great depending on the box.

You need an SD1 - box any will do from 3500 to 2300 - jag used the LT77 and so did the Slant Dolomites. and Sherpa.

Many thanks for clearing that up. I knew there was something not quite right but couldn't find anywhere that could give me a direct answer. Now I now.
Much appreciated.

2300 SD1 was a 4 speed, 5 speed was an option, so beware of that.

No they didn't, TR7 did though.

Never knew that the 2300 5 speed was an option.
Indeed - the TR7 not the Dolomite which was completely different - overdrive stuff and all that - getting me slants all confused

"What is is this section?" is the 5th gear casing.
I don't agree with the opinion that it's a 4X4 box, because the 4X4 box has the long output shaft to engage the transfer case and not a flange for the driveshaft like that one has and the rear casing is a different shape to the one pictured.

A 52A is a 4x4 box - the picture is NOT of the OP's box.
The picture is of what he wants needs, not what he has.

That's right John. The picture is the setup I need, what I have unfortunately is the 52A. When you research this it isn't immediately obvious I found, although saying that, now I know the difference I'll probably see it documented everywhere!

Anyone need a refurbed 4x4 box?

It's an easy enough mistake to make - many end up with 4x4 LT77 V8 Land Rover bellhousings when searching for V8 LT77 bellhousings not knowing that it is the SD1 V8 type bellhousing that is required. Likewise with manual flywheels etc. etc. etc.

The gearbox designations you are looking for are all here

Stephen, stick it on one of the Land Rover forums, you should move it on there.

I have an 2wd LT77 sitting in my garage complete with bell housing and remote, like the one in your pic. PM me if you're interested?

Tom.
