Have got hold of a late GEMS 4.6L to put in the old SD1,just wondering if anyone knows if the alloy sump will fit or if I need to play musical sump/timing covers to get it in?
Regards Doug

Iirc, you'll have some messing around at the rear but I've forgotton what the problem is

There's something about the sump which isn't straightforward.

Yeah I figured it wouldnt be a bolt in,I am hoping its a problem I can get around without having to swap to an interim steel sump and cutting and shuting that.

Hi Doug,
Sounds as if you will need to do alot of work to replace your std steel sump with an aluminium one.
I've got to ask why you want to go this route

, there can't be a weight advantage to go aluminium, or is it for cooling or something
Good luck thought

assuming he is using the proper 4.6 front cover I don't think the steel sump fits this.

The motor is a complete 1998 4.6 so has the late non dizzy timing cover meaning I cant use an SD1 sump.Id rather use the front of the motor as it is now ,just need to find out whats involved.

It won't fit. It's different at the timing cover end. See

There's a pic of an old style and P38 style sump (I know it's steel, but the bolt pattern is the same). You can see the timing cover part isn't the same.

Thanks for the pics. The timing cover end is fine as I have the late P38 timing cover on it.Looking at the pics and an SD1 sump I have here(Motor is still in transit) I looks like it will slot straight in as the deep section on the p38 one is a lot smaller than a classic sump.
Cheers Doug

This is still bugging me. I had one of these sumps and didn't/couldn't fit it. There must have been a good reason but I just can't remember what it was. I thought it was at the rear though, maybe fouling the gearbox?
