Does anyone on here recommend using a cold air feed sealed type air filter....like the pipercross venom???..

I been thinking of for while my engine draws too much warm air from under my small bonnet, temps can get up to 40degc while driving.

Are they worth the cost of £120?...anyone else use one?

think I would need the 100mm air intake one though, not the 75mm.

Most of them are too small/don't flow enough for a reasonable bhp RV8. I borrowed a mates venom and stuck it on my ~250bhp 3.9 and there was a definate power loss and you could see the restriction in the map sensor readings on the megasquirt datalogs.

I ended up making a diy version using a jetex air filter rated for 275bhp and made a fibreglass box using a big bit of the wifes tupperware as a mould. Intake temps dropped from averaging 40c odd to 15-20c, though how much power that was worth, i've no idea.

I thought about that (cold air) too and therefore fitted flared side panels to get the heat out but guess you cannot do that. My flares are about 100mm x 300mm each side.

I also used these two features.





I must admit, I have not checked the inlet air temp but easy to do with laptop when car back on the road in a few weeks time - yahoo!

Power went from 196bhp @ 40degC to 210bhp @ 20degC using aproximate figures for a Rover 4L

Remember seeing the 'factory' racing SD1s, where there was a box built round what looked to be the original air filter to bring in cold air past the rad from the front of the car.

The standard injection air filter is mounted low on the nearside, but draws air from within the engine compartment.

Can you spin the plenum 180 degs and the extend the filter in front of the rad?
It's always seemed crazy to me the westfield plenum design sucking in all that hot air at the back of the engine!

I stuck an ATS in the SD1 air filter housing. Interesting to see what temperatures that can get up to after idling for a while on a hot day. Getting on for 100C. Of course you're unlikely to need full power immediately after that, but even so.
