should Sus have a fuel return to tank

Hello every one, I have checked the forum and cant really find a definite answer.
I wander if any body can help me with a question, I have a Rover V8 90 running on very worn, leaking original Stromberg carbs. So I have just purchased a cracking set of SU carbs complete with linkages and manifold of a Rover SD1 car that have been overhauled.
My question is, the Strombergs have a fuel return pipe back to the fuel tank, but the SUs do not any outlet for a return pipe.
why is this? can I fit them or will fuel keep filling them up and then over flow, or will the electric pump stop when the carb is full.
Any advice would be great or has anybody else done this conversion as I want to crack on and fit the carbs.
many thanks Andy

The P6 3500 had a fuel return with SUs - but a mechanical pump. As far as I know, only the injection SD1 had a fuel return - but electric pumps?
So does yours have a mechanical pump?
Also, are you sure those carbs are suitable for your engine spec? For example, the SD1 tended to have a higher CR than the 4X4 versions. And Strombergs ain't usually expensive to overhaul good as new.

Thanks Dave for the reply,
it has the low pressure electric pump.

Hi
Sus are miles better carbs that strombergs, especially if you remove any emissions rubbish like the poppet valves off the back of the throttle plates (if they have them). I think they run best with a good fuel pump, a return to the tank and a fuel regulator to get a constant pressure (I don't like dead heading pumps) feed the SUs off Ts off the fuel rail before the regulator and after the pump. a bit over kill but it gives constant pressure with minimal pulsing and it can easily cope with changes in demand from the carbs.

The SU's will have a float chamber overflow outlet per carburettor. Normally these have a simple overflow pipe that's routed to overflow away from the engine/exhaust area, straight to the road. The overflow pipework can be ran back to the existing fuel overflow tank inlet in the same way as the Strombergs.
Using a good electric pump is always better than the old SU pumps, even the newer 'electronic' SU pumps. I've always ran twin FACET pumps in parallel with each pump spec'd against fuel flow req'd e.g. Blue or Red Tops. The important point with electrical pumps is good fuel filtration as electrical pumps don't like crud and use the fuel as lubrication and cooling. I place an oversized filter between the the tank and pumps, then another correctly sized filter before the carbs. FilterKing are good for under bonnet filters and have a tapping for fuel regulation. These guys have a full range of pumps and filters...
