4.6 rover heads- I have got to shorten my valve guides because the cam lift is too much, have a tool for doing it but then it takes away the recess for the valve seals, and they wont fit, whats the cure will the manta ones that people talk about do? if they will work anyone got a part number.

You could just press the valve guides a touch further into the head (and possibly shorten the nose end, if your tool fits in the port end).

The Opel Manta ones are hard to find in the UK ! got the part number but only available on ebay over £4 each !!!!!

This was all TVR did to accommodate more lift but they didnt trim the port protruding excess off it was bloody awful doing it your suggested way is easy and proper IMO

Real Steel did my first set and John Eales did my second set of heads for this. They have a milling tool that extends the shoulder down as well as trimming the top off. Then you fit the normal blue push on seals.

Better still especially seeing as the stock RV8 guides are long lasting I know Peter Burgess does similar work including bullet-ing guides in situ

big brutal drill bit and/or a grinder ? lol

Local parts factor got manta ones in, Payen 336 worked out about £2 each.

another question - any one used the Viton seals ?

I have used Crane viton seals. I machined the top of the guide to suit these seals with a Crower 86079 tool. It machines the OD to accept the seal and also has a tool to shorten the guide.

I have read the above posts and tried the seals suggested by Darkspeed although the little spring clip seal retainers popped of a tad too easily for my liking. Somebody previously mentioned blue neoprene ones. Are these any better? As above, my guides have been machined so there is now no retention groove. Is there a solution or a combination of Loctite and try again?
The cylinder heads look lovely all machined....they just need a rebuild.

Thanks, although as these are from the States I guess maybe the regular seals and Loctite . I;m surprised there is not a definitive solution as it seems to be a regular mod for guides.

I believe P38 engines all had a different guide where the top of the guide was machined to about 0,5" outer diameter, about 5/16" long.

See rimmerbros.co.uk and search LGJ000030. They don´t have a retention groove, the seal is pushed on and the metal retainer ring secures it in place. Real Steel stocks Comp Cams seals, BY510-16 is the one for 0,500" guide diameter and 11/32 valve stem diameter.

The ones I was referring to are for the later guides with the stepped top 0.5 will be a looser fit IMO we don't want these little blighters creeping off the guides cant say I have any time for the earlier guides that used those silly washers
