Hi all, im looking at getting a cheap 4x4 to tow my rover sd1 on a a-frame when needed. roversd1 is 3150lb roughly, what motor is legally able to pull it,and it has to diesel, all info welcome. rich

According to this, its considered a trailer and therefore needs to be braked if its over 750kilos. So is your a-frame braked?

I too heard same thing A frame for emergency only and to tow vehicle to safe place to await recovery.
This is the reason why we bought a trailer.

See lots of motor homes towing cars with A-Frames. Wonder if they realise they are considered "Illegal" by the DVLA

Yep a framing requires the car to be braked but you can get a braking attachment that goes in the car and pushes the brake pedal. A bit Heath Robinson but there you go. Had to use when when I worked for a bunch of anonymous alchoholics

Thanks for the replies, A-frame is not braked but that can be adjusted. Ive seen many cars using the a-frame and the cars they are towing have had no lights or interior fitted and most have been a rolling shell.Would like to get a trailer but funds are low . The use of a a-frame seems to be a black area,some sights say its ok as nothing is in law and others say its a no no. It just leaves me confused. rich

I would say in the past it was very much a grey area - but it seems to be far more clear nowadays.
