I'm in the middle of fitting a Scimitar 4HA axle under the back of a Rover P6, so far the mounts are almost done



I have had to cut the wheel bearings off to get the hubs off of the driveshafts in a press so that they can be modified for the larger Rover pcd. I need to order some replacement bearings in the next few days, and I've read there is a set endfloat on the shafts. I noticed one of the shafts could be pulled in and out by approx 1/8" before they were removed.

My first question is does anyone know what the endfloat is and how best to set it? I could buy a manual, but thought I'd ask here first. Secondly, I've read that the Jaguar Powerlock unit should fit into the Scimitar axle, but there is a difference in the centre because the shafts push in against the diff pins to the open diff, does anyone know any more about that?

I will look out my Scim manual and get the endfloat for you. I have done it a couple of times but can't remember what it should be.

If the hubs are anything like the norm you will need a 50 ton press and stand back when the taper breaks. They come apart with a real bang.

.003"-.009" is the endfloat in the manual with new bearings.

Hi, thanks for that, I've ordered a set of Scimitar manuals but that's the stuff I needed to know.

I had a mate with a 20ton press get the hubs off, and yes they went with a bang!

The only things left are to source the replacement wheel bearings and try to acquire an lsd before I re-assemble the axle, not a job I really want to be doing twice

Got any names or numbers on the axle bearings??

Or accurate dimensions??

Timken numbers are 14130 and 14276. There's a few available from the states cheaper than over here on ebay, just haven't got round to phoning about to see what local suppliers have in stock.

I've just emailed the enquiry to my stores chap. The chances are that the bearings I can get will be SKF or FAG equivalents.

How many of each do you need?

My stores guy just emailed me to say we dont stock these but they can be delivered next day to my office.

Dont worry about the prices. I'll get them at staff sales which is trade buy at price. So they should be cheaper than whatever you have been quoted. What prices have you had for these bearings?

Hi, it's a pair of each, one for each side. I've only done an ebay search so far, was going to phone around see what alternatives are out there apart from Timken. There are a couple on ebay, the best prices being in America

Just been pre-occupied with work, sorting out the pcd adapters and hunting for an lsd.

I've just found a pair of UBC bearings on the shelf at work with matching numbers for inner and outer parts. You can have these for the cost of postage if you PM me your address !!

I could do with getting this axle rolling now, got an lsd from a Jaguar, and waiting on the local grit blaster to finish with the axle casing, and I've made a start on the hub adapters

You got those bearings yet?? They went by courier last Friday ??

Hi yes they arrived yesterday, cheers for that

The axle case was delivered from the grit blaster today so I can continue work on it.

Just been pre-occupied with doing some welding on my SD1 the past few days!

It's been a while, but I've finally got round to dry assembling the modified Scimitar axle with the new bearings kindly supplied by Perry





Be nice to have it rolling soon, even better self propelled if I can find the time and money to build an engine for it!
