Hi guys just wandering what your thoughts are on the cam gear sets for the 350 chevy instead of the usual timing chain???
They seem to be Perry cheep and would eliminate any chain slack!

Is there less backlash between gears than with a chain and tensioner?

I fitted a Edelbrock cam gear drive to a customers Chevy 350 SS Nova years ago along with a load of other goodies it was the style where the dog bone gear set in the middle just floats about (not located or bolted to the block) personally I didn't like it too bloody noisy :o sounds like you have a blower fitted to the motor whining away constantly when you drive down the street people turned their heads to see what was coming 8) it almost drowned out the engine noise  at least with a blower its for a good reason, maybe they have improved now this was about 10 years ago now :D

Hi
the man is not wrong they are very noisy, however I don't think you will hear it over the screeching tires as you drift. . . They do the timing better than than a chain. Pretty well rock solid relative to the crank, they can slightly shorten the life of the cam as they fatigue the drive end of the cam especially with heavy valve springs. If you are running a distributor then it will help with spark timing. You get virtually as good a job as with a belt set up but at a much lower price. On a competition engine on a budget they offer good value and a worthwhile power gain.
best regards
Mike

But are they as adjustable as the chain gear system that we are all familiar with???. Will need to purchase a timing set soon, and had not thought about these.

I believe you can buy "noisy" sets and "non-noisy" sets 8)
