B-W 35 fault.

This is in a pal's Rover P5B. Too far away for me to look at - and he doesn't do 'forums'. It's a long time since I owned a car with a BW35.
Symptoms are snatchy gear changes and a thump when you engage drive or reverse. Idle speed is normal. Change up speeds may also be high at low road speeds.
To me this sounds like the classic sticking throttle (regulator) valve - the one which is spring return to a cam.
I'm told the downshift cable has been checked and is free - and the adjustment hasn't been messed with. But don't know if this is so.
Anyone know of a specialist in the Aberdeen area?
