Hi guys, I've just bought a set of SD1 3.5 EFI heads & have removed the the valves & noticed there are no stem seals. Is this correct? Are there heads without any?
If I should have them which type should I be looking at? As rimmers do a number of different types.

There are heads without seals, but I suspect they predate the SD1 EFi. I believe that engine should have rubber washers on the inlet valves.

The later engines had a step in the valve stem and the modern lip-seal type seals. I don't know when they were introduced though.

Unless you need lip type seals to get through emissions I would not bother, they are just hassle to fit and get in the way of valve lift. Fit umbrella type on the inlets but really unless you have to don't bother with anything else.

Thats right Chris. The pre SD1 just had rubber washers that ended up in nthe sump after not too long

If your valve guides do not have the tops machined which leaves a short section of the guide with a narrower diameter you have two options. Get them machined and fit the later push on seals. Or you can get seals that look the same, but they fit over the larger diameter of the un machined guides. I have one here somewhere in a box that Gelmonkey sent me as a sample, but my workstation is a mess. I think it may be an Opel seal. Find Gelmonkey on here and drop him a PM.

But as Mike says, if the guides are in reasonable condition and the rocker gear isnt flooding the valve gallery you probably wont need them?

Thanks guys, really appreciate your time in letting me know. Decided not to use any valve seals & putting the money i saved towards a set of ARP head bolts.

ARP bolts ?? Or a stud kit ??

Bought the 28 piece Stud kit.

You wont regret it. Especially if you pull it apart a few times to upgrade etc.

But dont fit the 4 outside studs. Or if you do just nip them up to about 30 ft/lbs. And make sure you use assembly lube between the washers and stud nuts when you torque them down.

2500cc v8, which one? is it the Lancia mid '80s engine, it is basically the 308 gt4 lump with a bit of a de-stroke, fiat used the same lump in one of the late '70s coupes.
Maserati had a couple of 2500cc V8s but I cant remember in what apart from the dog ugly coupe from the mid 80's different engine to the fiat/Ferrari unit.
Coventry climax? mid '60s March?
