Single turbo on a V8?

I saw the set-up inquestion a while back on the net, no idea where, but the prospect intrigued me.
Someone was running one bank with a normal exhaust, and the other bank had a turbo manifold that ran a turbo (subaru I think?).
Surely giving the 2 sides of the engine completely different breathing characteristics promotes uneven wear and will produce some problems?
After the headers I don't know what the exhaust did, wether it merged to one or kept 2 separate pipes to the end.
What's the thinking behind such a set-up? That one bank fights off the turbo-lag, when the other one is winding the charger up?
Tom.
