Single turbo on a V8?

I saw the set-up inquestion a while back on the net, no idea where, but the prospect intrigued me.

Someone was running one bank with a normal exhaust, and the other bank had a turbo manifold that ran a turbo (subaru I think?).

Surely giving the 2 sides of the engine completely different breathing characteristics promotes uneven wear and will produce some problems?
After the headers I don't know what the exhaust did, wether it merged to one or kept 2 separate pipes to the end.

What's the thinking behind such a set-up? That one bank fights off the turbo-lag, when the other one is winding the charger up?

Tom.

No doubt far from perfect, but in a low boost situation, it should work ok.

Im pretty sure Saab did the same for a while with one if its V6 engines.

Had someone asking me about it a while ago, not sure where he's at with it at the moment - but seemed to want to go ahead with it.

I would just sort a link pipe, even if it appeared to be crap, and use the entire engine, and a bigger blower.

It would work much better

It shouldn't work well, but that never stopped SAAB doing it on a V6 a few years ago.

Saab would have a little more time and money to develop it though, to make the most of it....

I still think a crude full single turbo would be better than a 1/2 turbo

No doubt at all. But like me you believe that, if you are going to boost it, you might as well BOOST it.

Good to hear I'm not the only one that thought it odd...
