CLUTCH NOISE ( found )

Hi all readers,
An update of my original post "Clutch noise" further down the page.
The problem was a noise when clutch engaged then disappeared when pedal pressed to release but not enough to disengage clutch - it would not go into gear - therefore not disengaged, well not completely.
Took the `box off eventually, I needed a lot of leverage, curses a stout lump of wood and a heavy hammer.
The spigot bush was still attached to the gearbox shaft, no damage to crank thankfully.
The spigot was trial fitted to the shaft and crank before assembly, however the `box did not go on very easily when fitted - no I did not use the bolts to push the box toward the engine - I just went with it knowing the clutch plate had lined up with the input shaft and was sliding on. I could see all seemed well through a manufactured hole in the bottom of the B.H.
Gentlemen, I need to pick your brains.
Where did I go wrong or what more could I have done better ( apart from walk away.)?
How loose can the spigot be as a fit to the input shaft of the box?
Thank guys,
