eddy 500 overflowed - time for new carb?

hi guys, had a very scary moment today, my carb seriously overflowed and covered the inlet manifold in fuel. It cut out on a fast moving section of 3 lane bridge and all i could do was cost off at like 10 mph. So not good.
Anyway, its an old 10 yrs eddy 500> im not sure yet what spec rods are in it etc.
I know i could probably rebuild etc, but ive lost confidence in the unit and its getting on a bit, i think im gonna buy a straight replacement. It was RR at about 280 bhp, so i dont see any reason to go bigger than the 500.
The fuel pump is also an unknown quantity.
So where to go from here:
1) Get fuel pressure reg so i can adjust/monitor what the new carbs is being fed with?
2) my tvr spec fuel filter sits near the pump, should i have a second one closer to the carb?
3) identify the rods etc and just copy those onto the new unit? as it seems to run ok on these - then fine tune later down the road.
but i dont want a repeat of today!
