Rover V8 timing

I have just read on the V8 forum someone describing how to time up a Rover V8 and they have stated that to check the number 1 cylinder is at TDC to remove the driver's side rocker box cover and check that the valves on no. 6 are slightly open.

According to my Haynes manual it states that No. 1 cylinder is at the front left hand bank and the event numbers are on the right hand side. We were assuming that 1, 3, 5 and 7 were on the left hand bank and 2, 4, 6, 8 on the right hand bank. As stated above, they are saying to remove the driver's side rocker box to check number 6 cylinder.

Which one is correct???

Many thanks

Garry

No 1 cylinder is at the front nearside of the engine. So the even numbers are driver's side.

Both are correct, the right hand and left hand are always as looking forwards from the driver's seat, not looking at the engine from the front, so the even numbers are on the RHS, which is the driver's side, providing of course that the car is RHD.....

Thanks!

Thanks for your input ... you are right that No. 1 is on the front passenger's side.

However, the manual is incorrect as later on it does say that No. 1 is on the driver's side nearest the radiator!!

I think some (if not all) of the carburettor manifolds have the cylinder number cast on the top by each port.
