fuel bypass connection, either connected to the other carb or the fuel return to the tank.

OK Thanks. One reply leads to another question. What do I do with the pipe leaving the left hand carb? The equivalent one to the clean pipe on the right hand carb. (I must remember to take smaller photos)

It's a return to the tank for excess fuel. Helps prevent fuel evaporation.

If you are talking about the plain bit of pipe with no nuts fitted, I think thats just the overflow??

:whs

On a v8 it's important to have an overflow, otherwise when the carb floods the fuel will spill over the hot engine and could catch fire. You need to have a tube extending to a cool area.
