LT77 Splines

Hi Guys
Looking around it looks like my Rover box has 23 - 1" splines. I asked Tilton about plates to fit this and they responded with a part number. Mike told me to check they are suitable for the Rover box as Ford use the same 23 - 1" setup but with different shaped splines. This is the response I got:
"Hi Cam
I am not familiar with the Rover gearbox. The 1” X 23 X 30 degree spline is the most common version, which is used by Ford, Porsche, Mitsubishi and many of the racing transmission manufacturers. The only other 1” X23 spline I am aware of is the 1 “ X23 X 45 degree used in the 1960’s by Chrysler. We do not offer the cerametallic discs with this spline."
Does anyone know if these will be compatible with the LT77?
Thanks
Cam

A decent heavy duty brake repairer should be able to swap the centres between clutches for you as long as they are similar sized and basically compatible.
I know folks who have had this done with no adverse results.

I had the same problem a few years ago when I fitted a Cosworth T5 to a Rover.
I bought a Mcleod clutch plate (AZ935) from Real Steel for 1"x23 splines and found it to be a little loose on the gearbox shaft. I fitted it and it worked but I was never happy with it.
Much later I mentioned it to Real Steel and they advised that they now sell a similar metric version plate for the ford 1"x 23 spline which I should have used on the T5 Gearbox. (Part BY 260120M)
So there are 2 versions of the 1"x 23 spline shaft but I don't think the clutch suppliers I have tried to talk to ever gave me any confidence that they were supplying the correct matching part.

Hi Cam
as I said in the PM the ford spline centre is often used on the LT77 but the rover version is
Preferable, I am pretty sure the actual spline angle is the same, the radius at the bottom of the input shaft is slightly different, if all they can offer is the ford I would use it, any way the LT77 will foil before the clutch plates which evet you use
Best regards
Mike

Cool, thanks guys.
Thanks Mike, Just thought I put up a post so that A: It's searchable for future members who need spline info (I had difficulty finding it online) and B: It doesn't seem like i'm always harassing you

I know you said you are a Chev man rather than a Rover.

Hi Mate
not a problem, posting it up has the advantage of getting more input as well. Denis has direct experience of the issue, I have only read about the issue, admitadly from several places.
best regards
Mike

Just ring AP Racing and get them to sort you out with a Ford equivalent, if they haven't got any Rovers. Both plates cost me less than £100 together. When I bought them a few years back the Ford ones were identical to the worn Rover one I removed (btw I had a twin plate clutch hence two of them).

Cool, i'll have a look.
The advantage of the Tilton units is that the clutch can be had for reasonable money from the states.

As long as you have factored in Import Duty, Shipping, Insurance and of course the HRMC 'Handling Charge' which was about £8 last time I bought from the states.
To be fair, a clutch plate is £40-50, not really worth going to the states for!

The bits are going to NZ and as the Tilton clutch would be second hand, there would be no import taxes.
I'm only talking about the clutch. Not the plates
I'll check out the AP stuff.

Using a screw cutting tool as a gauge (60 degrees) they definitely look to be a standard 30 degree pressure angle.
Regards Ged.
By the way how's Wellington (still windy).

No problem, I'm actually in the UK at the moment but the car is in Welly. I'm sorting all the bits while I'm here and sending them home.
Yup, was still windy when I left
