Is a red Top OK?

Linked to my previous fuel pressure problems, I have fitted a Red Top Facet pump with a pressure regulator on a bog std 3.5 with a Webber 500 carb.
I seem to be having pressure fluction problems.
Can I run without the regulator?
The spec on the pump is max 7psi. Would this cause problems on tick over?
Regards
Dave

I would reccomend allways run a regulator, 7psi, I would think you will be getting into float lifting territory, What regulator are you using, ??

on the webber 7psi is a problem you need to be down to 4.5-5 psi

I am running a Facet Red Top for several years now with no problems at all since I fitted a kingfilter with a fuelpressure gauge.

Just buy yourself a Kingfilter (Rallydesign) and a fuelpressuregauge. Remove the brass plug on the outletside of the Kingfilter and screw the gauge in.
Set fuel pressure with the big nut on the midlle of the Kingfilter at around 5 Psi.

That is my problem. I have a Filter King fitted and adjusted it to 5 psi but the pressure is not stable.
The adjustment is not linear. It seems I could have a pump problem but the pump is new and is the second one I have tried.
I recently tried a Mallory pump. The pressure was much better than the Facet and I could adjust it better but it was too noisey, even completely boxed in and on rubber mounts.

Could there be a partial blockage somewhere?
Have you checked the filter(s)?

I have checked both filters and found no problems but I have noticed the plastic filter on the pump inlet, has only has about 5 - 10 mm of fuel in it. It is orientated about 45deg down to the pump which is fitted about 100 mm below the level of the bottom of the tank.
I have removed the fuel cap to check if the tank is not pressurising and it is OK.
Is this amount of fuel in the filter normal?

filter will only fill as far as the outlet on it so if the fuel is covering then then its ok.
