There's a 4.6 SD1 on Ebay claiming a top speed of "over 160mph"
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/121007229771
and I wondered just how much power/torque one would need to have a
genuine top speed of over 160 mph?

A lot more than you would ever get out of an RPI 4.6 rover V8, probally about 400 BHP more!

The SD1 in PPC did 160mph ish with > 500bhp from a V12 Meteor.

Wonder what the peak torque from a Meteor is? Of course it wouldn't do much for the power to weight ratio.

And that guy built it to go for 200mph ... long way off!
RPi 4.6 does about 300bhp at best, that guy is claiming a £6k build cost?!

Hi
From what I remember the meteor in that SD1 thing made peak power at around 2800 revs, so peak torque was at the same point it would be about 1000 ftlb, if it was at lower revs then it would be alot more. . . I know he had a 3:1 ratio box (gearing up) out of a bus before the torque converter and TH400 on it so he didn't balloon the converter and burn out the transmission.
Best regards

50 ft.lb per litre wouldn't be a million miles out for a crude long stroke carb engine. So 1000 ft.lb is a likely figure.

Depends on a lot of things
I had the Gt40 on Mulsanne straight @ Le Mans
It has 256hp on a 3.9 JE built motor
I saw the speedo at 145mph and the revs were still rising
She was very light on the nose at that speed so my attention was more fixed on keeping it straight and on the road.
Realistically I probably got to the 150 - 155 range
But the car is a lot better nose area wise than an SD1 brick
And back in the 1960's Ford rated their 289's at 450hp and they were geared to do 208mph down the same straight continuously for 24 hours!
