I was with John today. He showed me his new timing cover.
Its really neat for guys like me who dont have the room to fit a cover with a crank driven oil pump.
He has now made his own casting that looks like a P6 cover which uses the short water pump etc. But it has a crank driven oil pump.
The timing cover has just two -10 fittings sticking out to connect to your oil filter. Its a very nice bit of kit I must say.
This is on my budget list for next year as it will give me the option to keep the dissy or to go with a trigger wheel etc in my very tight engine bay

I assume it uses a 3.9 type sump and pickup and not a 4.6 type??

I dont know Denis!!
But it does look pretty
Whats the difference in the pick up?? mine has been modified but it still connects to the oil suction gallery on the side of the engine.

Some of the later engines have the pickup pipe going directly to the front cover, not using the gallery in the block at all.

Chris.
And the sump front end bolt pattern is different on the later engines. (4.6 etc)

Hmm!!
I'll have to check now. I'm sure I was using my old MGBV8 1975 sump on the 4.6 before I knacked it.

Quite possible.
The blocks are all the same but the 4.6 non dissy front cover has 3 bolts into the sump flange and dissy type front covers have 2 bolts.
ie, Early sump and front cover will match.
Later sump and front cover will match.
Cheers Denis

Thanks Denis, thats a great bit of info for me to store in my noggin

I've only ever used dissy front covers !!
So if I was to buy one of these covers would I just need to drill another hole in the sump flange. Or are the 3 holes in the cover in totally different positions??

No.
You can't just drill an extra hole. The 4.6 sump is a different shape and has one front corner shaved at 45 degrees, whereas early sumps are a symmetrical shape at the front.
I'm still not sure which sump the new JE cover suits.
I did once weld the top part of a P6 cover to the lower part of a 4.6 cover so that I had a clockwise rotation water pump and a crank driven oil pump.
Never did use it though.
Cheers Denis

It was quite common in NZ to use the lower part of a Buick v6 (used in Holden Commodores here) to the top of a RR front cover to get a crank driven oil pump with a dissy, that was before interim covers became more available.

Is the key way long enough on the crank for the woodruff key to go in ? Or do you need to lengthen this.

I spoke with John..
STD SD1 oil sump and pick up pipe will fit.
You have to use serpentine belt type damper, or John race dampper.
You have to buy pulley kit.
buy alternator pracket
buy maybe new alternator, or modify John pracket to suit old alternator?
He don´t have power steering possibility yet.
You have to buy custom oil filter pracket + hoses.
Total price is near 7-800£ inc vat.
