righty ho folks im getting a bit fed up of the little leak i have on the gearbox, at first i thought it was just the oil filler/dipstick seal where it meets the box but after sorting that and closer inspection i can see that its actually running out of the square opening on the bell housing, is there a seal at the front of the box that is prone to leaking and can be replaced/
cheers
chris

Would suspect it is the Torque convertor seal on the nose of the box, looks like ATF (red in clour) it will be replaceable, but the box will need to come out of course

Only one way to find out for sure

Are you certain it's not just finding it's way there? The most likely places a TH180 leaks from is the kickdown cable entry and the selector lever cross shaft - assuming you really have sorted the one from the filler. :D

I just jetwashed all the old oil off and dried with compressed air after a run and it's just coming from that opening :-(

Hi
As well as replacing the oil seal check the bearing at the gearbox input oil seals do not fail without reason.

Can I swap seal without taking bellhousing off? Or is it a seal that is further back that's leaking??

Hi
Most likley that first seal, how you get it out I do not know, but getting the bell housing off is about 3 minutes work!

Hi
It looks like the outer bolts hold the bell housing onto the main case, the inner ones will be holding the pump. . unbolt the outer ones and I suspect the bell housing /front cover will come away with the pump attached. you may have to hold the input shaft in place as you remove it but it is not "loaded with springs!
Best regards

Hi
You might find this a help
http://en.oto-hui.com/a3396/[gm-training]-automatic-transmission-4l30-e.html
it is the 430L but I think that is just an electronicly controlled version of the Th180.
Best regards

One common reason for failure of that seal is damage caused by removing/replacing the box with the TC still in place.

Since you've got to do some stripping to change the seal, examine the pump carefully at the same time. They are often the first thing to fail with high miles.
